Hi, I’m Chandra. I’m originally from Sumatra in Indonesia but I moved to Bali in 2009 and started working on the beach with my uncle, who is a surf instructor. I quickly learned how to surf and he taught me how to be a surf instructor too.
In 2011 I opened my own surf school in Legian offering surf lessons, surfboard rental, and beach sunbeds. My brother Johnny started working with me, and later one of my cousins joined us as well.
I had to close my business in 2020 because of the pandemic, but I started making videos around Bali so people could see what the situation was like. So, you may also know me as Uncle Chan!
In 2023 I was able to re-open my surfing and sunbeds business along with a new bar, Uncle Chan’s Beach Bar.
I love my job, I’m proud of my business and I enjoy making friends with new customers every day, so I hope you will come and visit us when you’re on holiday in Bali.

He checked the tides and the best timing for beginners, and then we met with Eddy and Antonio (our instructors for the lessons) at the designated time next day.
The price is cheaper if you book via the website, and Chandra is nice enough to let you know this.
We started with a quick theoretical lesson on the beach, and then we run into the water for 1 hour.
We managed to get up on the board in just a few minutes, and then Eddy and Antonio helped us catch dozens of waves.
We took a 10 minutes break after, and then we went back for about 45 more minutes.
Chandra is doing this for 13 years, and he is great to chat with. Also, he is a great photographer if you decide to take the photography option.
If we are to make it back in Kuta, we’ll definitely visit Chandra again! We had a great time and they made us have an awesome experience, wanting to try it again!

Chandra was extremely encouraging and also clear with his instructions. He also gives extremely constructive and helpful tips to ensure that I get better with every try! And when I fail, he is still constantly encouraging, pushing me to get better with every surf!
He’s super passionate about surfing and you can tell from the way he teaches.
As a female solo traveller taking this class alone, it was a really good experience. Chandra made me feel really safe as a student and u could definitely count and trust on him as an instructor!:)
He’s really earnest and honest as well. I was supposed to take 2 days of 2 hr beginner lessons. But because I could stand after the first one, Chandra encouraged me to go with the cheaper alternative - which was to just rent the board to practise the next day, instead of taking another lesson.
He was also really helpful in telling me which time of the day would be the best to go and surf 🙂 he also very kindly offered to take photos of me surfing towards the end of the lesson!
Will definitely come back and say hi to the folks at chocolate bar as well! They’re all incredibly warm and friendly!
Maps found this super perfect spot! If you are searching for some friends feeling private coaches instead of boring group courses this is the place! Antonius, Dady and Chandra are just the nicest and coolest Indonesien friends! The price was reasonable, the course itself was perfect, got pics from them not costing extra anything. I stayed afterwards for quite a while and we chatted about surfing, life, everything and watched the sunset together! Got the amazing pics as well from Dady! Saying that he can not leave lady alone they even offered me a ride back home, I would say the best part is not just surfing anymore but to have knowing these nice guys! I can definitely just recommend!

We’re not a big company, but that means we can offer a friendly and personal service to every customer. If you book a surf lesson with us, we promise it will be just you and your instructor (not a big group of people you don’t know).
We believe that this kind of personal attention is the best way to help you learn to surf and improve quickly. For groups of 4 or more, you’ll get 2 instructors for your lesson.
Even if you don’t want to surf, you’ll have fun hanging out with our team and making some new friends in Bali.

Surf and relax
We are situated right on the beach and also have sunbeds available for rent- the perfect place to relax with a cold drink after you’ve tired yourself out from surfing.
If not everyone in your party wants to surf, no problem! They can sit and watch you from the comfort of our sunbeds. Don’t forget to stay and enjoy the sunset too! We offer special surf and sunbed packages which are great if you want to spend the whole day on the beach.
